Fort Rock

July 18th, 2016

Staying near Bend Oregon for a family vacation, I stole away for the day to take a long drive to see a couple of places I've been curious about, but have been too far away to visit until now. Fort Rock and Crack in the Ground. I am breaking this trip into two posts to better define each place. This first post is all about Fort Rock. Part two about the Crack in the Ground can be found here.

There was very good signage at Fort Rock. I will include some images I took of the signs because they tell the story of how Fort Rock was created better than I can.

"In 1938 Luther Cressmann, a University of Oregon archaeologist, discovered prehistoric artifacts in the cave, including sandals woven from bark and dating back more than 9,000 years." Quoted from the fortrockoregon.com webpage.

It is hard to convey with pictures what it is like inside Fort Rock since it is too big to fit in one frame. This video shows a little of what it is like inside. Try to ignore my uneducated dialog explaining how Fort Rock was formed. Read the sign pictures above for a better explanation. I'm not a geologist after all.

The trail inside Fort Rock leads to this breach in the rim where good views to the northwest can be had.

Macrocarpus (Sagebrush Mariposa Lily). These seem to be pretty abundant in this arid landscape.

I took several panoramas at Fort Rock. This one came out the best.
