Mink Lake Loop – Olympic National Park
The Mink Lake Loop is a full-day hike that starts from and is mostly within the Sol Duc Valley, combining deep rainforest, ridge walking, and alpine lakes into one rewarding circuit. The 13-mile loop gains about 2,500 feet and showcases some diverse terrain in the Olympic Mountains.
Starting from the Mink Lake Trailhead near Sol Duc Hot Springs, the route climbs steadily through moss-covered fir and cedar to reach Mink Lake, a quiet basin surrounded by boggy meadows and evergreens. From there, the trail continues upward to Little Divide, the high point of the hike. The ridge section rolls gently for quite a distance, offering occasional glimpses across the Sol Duc and Bogachiel valleys before beginning a gradual descent toward Deer Lake.
Deer Lake is larger and more open, ringed by hemlock and subalpine meadows that bloom with wildflowers in summer. From here, the rocky trail drops through dense forest toward Sol Duc Falls, where the sound of rushing water signals the end of the backcountry stretch. A short detour leads to the viewpoint of the three-tiered waterfall before the Lover’s Lane Trail loops back toward the trailhead.
This is a moderate to strenuous day hike but one that captures the essence of Olympic National Park — quiet lakes, lush rainforest, and rugged mountain terrain all in a single loop. The best season is mid-July through September, when the snow has melted from the divide and the lakes are at their most inviting.
