Chelan Lakeshore Trail

Overview of the Lakeshore Trail

The Lakeshore Trail on Lake Chelan is one of the most unique backcountry hikes in Washington State. This point-to-point trail runs about 18 miles from Prince Creek to Stehekin, hugging the rugged shoreline where the mountains plunge straight into the deep blue lake.

Because there are no roads to the starting point, most hikers reach the trailhead via the Lady of the Lake ferry from Fields Point or Chelan. From Prince Creek, the trail rolls gently with moderate ups and downs, winding through pine slopes, grassy benches, and shady forest pockets—all with constant views of Lake Chelan.

Trail Highlights and Campsites

Hikers experience varied terrain:

  • Sunny slopes with ponderosa pine
  • Shady creek crossings that offer a refreshing pause
  • Meadow benches ideal for rest breaks or scenic lunches

Popular camping spots include:

  • Moore Point Campground – large campsites, swimming access, and campfire rings
  • Flick Creek Campground – smaller and more tucked away

Most backpackers split the hike into 2–3 days, giving time to relax by the water and soak in the remote beauty of Lake Chelan.

Reaching Stehekin

The trail ends in the secluded valley town of Stehekin, which has no road access. Many hikers celebrate their arrival by renting bikes and pedaling up the road to the beloved Stehekin Pastry Company for fresh baked goods. Another must-see stop is Rainbow Falls, where glacial water cascades dramatically through old-growth forest.

A night at Purple Point Campground near town makes for a comfortable end before boarding the ferry home—either the classic Lady of the Lake or the speedier Lady Express.

My Trip Report (May 2019)

I hiked the Chelan Lakeshore Trail with Brian and John the weekend before Memorial Day 2019. Early season hikers should confirm ferry stops at Prince Creek, since they don’t always begin service until late May.

This was my second time on the route. My first was a solo overnight—my first ever backpacking trip alone. On this group trip, we stayed at Moore Point the first night and Purple Point the second. We rented bikes in Stehekin, rode to the bakery, and visited Rainbow Falls before catching the Lady Express back to Fields Point. It was the perfect early-season adventure.
