Duckabush thru North Fork Skokomish backpack

I was supposed to do this trip on the previous weekend but since that was the 4th of July and I had priorities with family, I put it off until this weekend. I have hiked up the North Fork Skokomish countless times, either to do the Staircase Rapids loop or to go up to Flapjack Lakes. Even stayed at Camp Pleasant once. I had never set foot on the Duckabush until this trip, so this was to be a new adventure for me.

Seabeck Time Lapse

I created a time lapse sequence last night in Seabeck looking towards the Olympic Mountains across the Hood Canal. Sequence is comprised of about 350 images over the course of an hour. Special thanks to Hayden for being so patient.

Lower Big Quilcene Trail

Lower Big Quilcene Trail
January 30 2011

Inspired by Jim’s trip report from the 22nd, two different groups of people I know were planning to hike the Lower Big Quilcene trail. Isaac, Kyle and Craig were in one group, Ron, Tess, Paul N and myself in the other. A third set of folks I invited at the last minute also showed up, Paul C and his hometown friend Sarah. The trip to the trailhead could have been better planned by all involved. We left Silverdale around 7:45 and quickly lost the way to the trailhead once we got on the forest roads. For some reason we decided to take the side road that leads to the Tunnel Creek Trailhead. We followed that Road for about 4 miles and I am sad to report that the way to Tunnel Creek is blocked by a large rock slide about 4 miles in. It is going to take some big machinery, a big stick of dynomite, or both to clear it. Luckily it didn’t appear to have damaged the road other than blocking it. I did not get a picture of it.

Dayhiking the High Divide

I did this loop last year as a day hike in the fall. I was eager to see this trail again and under different circumstances as it shed its winter coat. Being given notice that I would be able to hike on this Saturday at the last minute, my invites went out kind of late so I didn’t expect many responses, if any. I was surprised that my new friend Paul Cooney who I met a few weeks prior on the West Cady Ridge loop with Kevin Koski was interested in going. I was also surprised when my other friend Robin Vasquez who I have done several hikes with called and said she was also interested in going. Arrangements were made and after meeting at my house we drove my car and arrived at the trail by 8:30.

High Divide – Seven Lakes Basin Loop Dayhike

The Back-Story
I had tried unsuccessfully 3 times to hike the High Divide loop this year. The first time I just got lazy and decided that a weekend at home sounded nice. The second time, my job at the last minute required me to be at home for some on-line training over the weekend. The third time I was due for an overnight hike and thought I would drive out to the campground at Sol Duc on a Saturday, camp and get a really early start the next morning and do the whole loop in a day. As I was packing to leave on Saturday the 19th, I got a phone call and learned that my brother had passed away. Needless to say my plans for the weekend had changed. I won’t get into all the details but I will say that his passing was unexpected and the cause at this point is unknown. Needing time to reflect on his life, needing some time to myself to reflect on the things that are important to me and my family and really needing to finally get this trail on my ‘been there done that’ list, I decided to head out on Saturday the 26th of Sept 2009 to hike it.

Lena Lake Backpacking Trip

7 Miles RT – 1000′ Elevation Gain

I decided to take Dawn to Lena Lake for an overnight trip. I told her all she had to bring was the tent and her sleeping bag, I would carry everything else. To make a long story short, It’s hard to keep the mosquitoes off of you when you have to sleep with the door of the tent open because your girlfriend didn’t make sure she packed the adult tent and not the kids tent she had. LOL

Unsure of the exact date.
